Bus Contraflow lane

Bus Contraflow lane is the first investment in Poland, and one of the few in Europe, aimed at relieving traffic jams by providing a dedicated lane allowing public transport vehicles to travel against the traffic.

A bus contraflow lane has been created on a 1,100-metre of one of the main streets in Gdynia. It activates during high traffic volumes and situations that may pose challenges on the roadway. This solution improves public transport, allowing passengers travelling from the western districts towards the city centre to cut journey times by up to 10 minutes.

The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) elements used to build the contraflow:

• Variable message signs
• prismatic signs
• Bluetooth/Wi-Fi detectors
• video surveillance cameras

The devices were connected to the TRISTAR Integrated Traffic Management and Control System, which makes it possible to monitor the traffic situation and give priority to public transport.
